Since 1988, Community Action Center (CAC) has been a primary resource for thousands of people and families experiencing poverty in Whitman County. We operate as a private nonprofit in Whitman County, Washington.

Diaper Bank

Community Action Center provides free diapers to the public.

Energy Assistance

Energy and heating/cooling assistance programs available for those who are eligible according to income guidelines. CAC's energy assistance programs include: Washington State Department of Commerce Programs -Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Avista's Energy Programs- My Energy Discount-WA, Low Income Rate Assistance Program (LIRAP,) Avista Share Project Share, our donation-based energy program Conservation education and materials available. Please do not wait until your power has been shut off to get assistance! Call Community Action Center for an appointment as soon as you get a past due notice.

Monthly food boxes sent out to area food banks for their senior residents to pick up.

Mobile Farm Stand

The Mobile Farm Stand operates on a “pay-what-you-can” model, serving everyone in a community, from those experiencing food insecurity to those who can gladly pay for good food in their communities. Check website for date, time, and location where the Farm Stand will be operating.

Emergency Food Box

If you or someone you know is in need of food, please contact CAC at 509-334-9147 to request an Emergency Food Box. CAC will provide up to 4 Emergency Food Box delivers a year.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - Washington

CAC will answer questions and assist individuals who want to enroll or re-certify in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). To make an appointment contact our front desk at (509) 334-9147.

Eviction Prevention

CAC may be able to assist tenants with funds to prevent eviction. Call during office hours, 8am-4:30pm Monday-Friday, to schedule an appointment with a housing specialist to see if you qualify. Eviction Prevention Assistance is based on applicant qualifying and available funds.

Summer Street House

The Summer Street House has 4 studio apartments, tenants income must be at or below 50% of medium income, and LMK provided resident services.

Grady House

The Grady House was renovated in 2015. The Grady House has 3 1bedroom units, and 1 studio apartment, tenants income must be at or below 50% of medium income, and DreamWorks provides resident services.

Steptoe Court

This 4-plex, has 4 studio apartments, located in Pullman directly behind the Hughes House. The tenant’s income cannot exceed 50% of medium income. The resident services are provided by LMK.

Hughes House

The Hughes House is a group home to 4 Developmentally Disabled tenants whose income does not exceed 50% of the medium income. The resident services are provided by LMK.

Johnson House

4 – 1 bedroom units designated for the developmentally disabled. 2 units are at 50% of the medium income and 2 are at 30% of the medium income. DreamWorks provides resident services to our tenants.

8 studio apartments and housing the developmentally disabled whose income is at or below 50% of medium income. DreamWorks provides resident services to our tenants.

Section 8 Housing

The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federal program administered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Spokane Housing Authority (SHA). In Whitman County, the Community Action Center administers the program.

Transitional Housing

CAC operates a transitional housing program that provides subsidy for rent based on household income. Candidates are screened and the situation is assessed by a Housing Solutions staff member, and an application is submitted based upon the initial screening and assessment process.

Emergency Shelter

Office is open 8-4:30, M-F, make an appointment with a Housing Solutions staff member, which is the first step to receiving this resource. Homeless housing assistance is based on the current situation and available funds. CAC may be able to provide 1-3 nights for a hotel stay. Call the Pullman Police for after-hours request at 509-332-2521.

Limited Transportation Assistance

Transportation assistance is available on a limited basis and contingent on fund availability. Anyone seeking transportation assistance MUST schedule an appointment in advance to help assess the individual’s needs and possible solutions.
